In the Q&A below, learn about Katie Hall, Director of Crossroads CASA, and how you can join her team of volunteers in impacting neglected children in Jasper, Newton, and Benton counties.

How did you get involved in the nonprofit sector?

“I had the opportunity to begin a CASA program for Jasper County in 2008 after working one year in the education field. I had not previously heard about CASA, which stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate, but jumped at the job opportunity, and it has changed my life. After we started Jasper County CASA, we expanded to Newton County in 2010 and Benton County in 2013. Besides being the Director of the program, I believe a leader should lead by action so I take cases on myself.”

How long have you been at the organization in your current position?

“August 2025 will mark my 17th year leading CASA.”

What services does your organization offer?

“Our volunteers advocate for children who are in the court system because they have been abused or neglected. We give these children a voice by meeting with them face-to-face once a month, getting to know them, and speaking for their best interests.

I believe a lot of people have the mindset that this would be too hard or that they are not qualified to volunteer with CASA. We ask that you are at least 21 years of age, pass a background check, and go through a training where you learn the role and responsibilities of a volunteer. This is a unique opportunity where you can make a lifelong difference for a local child in need. We estimate that a volunteer spends 5-10 hours a month (sometimes less) handling their CASA Volunteer responsibilities.”

Where could your organization use some support from the community?

“We would love for the community to step up and help children in need. Our program advocated for 128 children in 2024 had been abused/neglected but over 20 local kids did not have a volunteer. I would like to see that so every child has a voice and someone they can count on during this difficult time in their life.”

Why is it important for you to serve your community by being part of this organization?

“It is very much a ripple effect that continues with future generations. You are helping a child and family in need. They are at the lowest point in their life, and you help lift them up. We often say that our volunteers change a child’s story.”

What are your favorite things about living in your community, and why?

“I very much love where I live. The people that we have around us, the ones that will stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves, they inspire me daily. We have a lot of wonderful people around us in Jasper, Newton, and Benton Counties.”

If you could see one thing improve here – what would it be?

“I would like to see more people get involved with a civic group or volunteer program. There are several amazing groups and opportunities in the area. I understand it can be intimidating to step out of a comfort zone, but it is a feeling like no other, knowing that you are doing good and making a difference.”
