Mitchell D. Mullen is on a mission to ensure future generations in Jasper and Newton Counties have the same opportunities he once received. Having grown up in these communities, he credits his success to the support and resources found here—and now, he’s determined to give back.
Mitchell serves on the Jasper Newton Foundation Board, where he works to understand and address the unique strengths and needs of both counties. He believes shaping a community’s future starts with listening and learning from those who call it home.
“I was looking for a meaningful way to get involved and make an impact across both Jasper and Newton Counties,” Mitchell said. “Serving on the board has given me the opportunity to better understand the needs, strengths, and opportunities in not only Jasper County, where I live, but also Newton County. It has broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for the work being done throughout both communities.”
Seeing the big picture has enabled Mitchell to play an active role in creating opportunities for the people of his community—just as they once did for him.
“Serving Jasper and Newton Counties isn’t just something I do,” he said. “It’s personal. This community shaped who I am. It’s where I grew up, where my business is, and where I want future generations to thrive. I’ve had the opportunity to serve on the Finance Committee, the Driving Home Committee, as well as the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Committee, all of which have allowed me to support initiatives that directly impact local families and students.”
Yet, making an impact requires attention to the small details, too. When he’s not working on big-picture initiatives, Mitchell enjoys connecting with the people who make Jasper and Newton Counties unique.

“In Jasper County, one of my favorite restaurants is Embers. Janelle has created such a welcoming and social atmosphere there,” he said. “In the summer, I especially enjoy sitting outside with friends and sharing a bruschetta board — it’s one of those places that really brings people together. Then, in Newton County, I always enjoy visiting Mike and Mara Davis at The Old Colonial Inn. It’s a true local staple. If you go, you have to try the linguine in clam sauce — it’s a recipe passed down through Mara’s family, and it’s incredible.”
Mitchell’s dedication extends beyond his own efforts—he truly values the work of Jasper and Newton County residents to improve their communities.
“What excites me most is the momentum. We’re seeing collaboration between businesses, nonprofits, civic leaders, and families who truly care. There’s a strong entrepreneurial spirit here, and a growing understanding that strategic investment — whether in people, infrastructure, or philanthropy — creates lasting change.”
Just as Jasper and Newton Counties supported him, Mitchell believes anyone can help shape their community—no matter how small their role may seem at first.
“If you want to see real impact from your time or resources, invest locally, where you’re strengthening families, supporting education, empowering nonprofits, and shaping the future,” Mitchell said. “You don’t have to do everything. Start somewhere. Join a board, volunteer an hour, contribute to a fund, mentor a young professional. When individuals commit even a small piece of themselves to the community, the ripple effect is powerful. And there’s no greater return than knowing you helped build something that will outlast you.”
