Did you know Jasper and Newton Counties were first organized in the 1830s? While Newton County may be “Indiana’s Youngest County,” both communities share a rich history of remarkable growth—closely watched over by generations of Kristina Mitten Sanders’ family.

For over a century, Kristina’s family has put down roots in Newton County, passing down a tradition of pride and care for their community—a tradition Kristina now upholds.

“Growing up in Goodland, my family instilled in me the importance of community and displaying pride in our hometown,” Kristina said. “I can think of no better way than to honor the generations that have come before me than to continue to build upon their hard work and love for this community.”

The rich history of her home community has shaped Kristina’s values and inspired her commitment to ensuring its bright future.

“I joined the JNF Board because the leadership and community focus of the Foundation is truly top-notch, and I am honored to be a small part of their efforts,” Kristina said. “I also volunteer at Brook United Methodist Church, ABC Preschool, and Kentland Task Force.”

Yet, what makes giving back so fulfilling for Kristina is the people who, like her, call these counties home and strive to be a part of them.

“The individuals who make up our communities are truly amazing. The heart of each county can be found in each town you visit, each place of business, every sporting event, county fair, or local gathering. Connection and community are what will continue to drive success in our beloved towns.”

With her family’s support, Kristina carries their traditions

As our towns, neighborhoods, and families continue to grow, Kristina believes building a bright, lasting future will require all of us working together, step by step.

“There is no better place to invest your time and talents than right here in our backyards. Your investment can be put into action in the programs and projects that will continue to make Jasper & Newton Counties places to love where we live for generations to come.”

Our community wouldn’t be the same without you, Kristina. Thank you for taking pride in our counties and their history to help build them a promising future.

Get involved and make your impact on the stories of Jasper and Newton Counties—your actions, big or small, matter.
